Eu implementing decision 2020/480
- Established October 2, 2021, as the expiration date for EN 602041:2006 as a harmonized standard providing a presumption of conformity to the Machinery Directive
- Mandated EN 60204-1:2018 as the successor to the 2006 version, serving as the current harmonized standard for the presumption of conformity to the Machinery Directive
Why does EN 60204-1:2018 make EMC testing mandatory compared to the 2006 version?
EN 60204-1:2006
- Under clause 4.4.2, it simply described design and installation practices (e.g., cable separation) aimed at reducing EMC issues
IEC 60204-1:2016
- Introduced a modular approach to resolving EMC issues (suggesting that using CE-marked components could bypass testing)
- Introduced Annex H, which outlined specific mitigation measures for electromagnetic disturbances
EN 60204-1:2018
- Removes all exclusion conditions previously allowed by the 2006 and 2016 versions
- Introduces and explicit reference to the IEC 61000-6 series (Electromagnetic Compatibility standards)
The results: since October 2, 2021, manufacturers declaring compliance with the Machinery Directive can no longer rely on the presumption of conformity provided by the 2006 or 2016 versions. Instead, they are required to conduct EMC testing and include the resulting test reports in their Technical File.
Unlike LVD requirements, EMC tests do not necessarily need to be performed on every single machine; they can be conducted on a representative sample machine that typifies a family of machines with similar characteristics.
